History of St. John's

A LEGACY OF FAITH & FELLOWSHIP

The Journey of St. John’s: From humble beginnings in 1952, our church has flourished, marking milestones of faith, community, and spiritual growth. From our first services in the American Legion Hut in Greenwood, Mississippi to the dedication of our Family Life Center, each chapter of our story is a testament to God's grace and our shared commitment to serving His purpose.

KEY MILESTONES


  • July 13, 1952: A group of men from First United Methodist Church of Greenwood met to discuss purchasing a lot for a new Methodist church in North Greenwood. The lot was purchased in August 1952.
  • May 2, 1954: The new congregation was organized, choosing the name "St. John's." Charter membership closed in July 1954 with 203 members. The American Legion Hut was chosen for the first meeting place.
  • April 1, 1956: The first building was completed, and the Service of Formal Opening in the sanctuary (now the Fellowship Hall) was held on Easter Sunday.
  • 1959: A unit providing seven more classrooms was added to accommodate continued growth.
  • May 31, 1970: The first service of worship was held in the new sanctuary, consecrated on July 12, 1970, by Bishop Edward J. Pendergrass.
  • April 29, 1984: Celebrated two hundred years of Methodism and thirty years as a church on Heritage Sunday.
  • December 10, 1989: A service of dedication was held after the sanctuary addition's note was paid off in the fall of 1988.
  • November 15, 1998: Groundbreaking for the new Family Life Center. It was consecrated on October 24, 1999, with the Reverend Fred H. Brown presiding.
  • April 25, 2004: A 50th Anniversary celebration was held for St. John's.
  • June 28, 2010: The last payment on the Light Family Center was made, marking the completion of financial commitments for the center.
