History of St. John’s

On Sunday, July 13, 1952, a group of men who were members of First United Methodist Church of Greenwood met to discuss the purchase of a lot for a new Methodist church in North Greenwood.  The lot was purchased in August, 1952.

The new congregation was organized in 1954.  The members of this young church selected the name "St. John's" on May 2, 1954.  Charter membership closed in July 1954, with an enrollment of 203 members.  The American Legion Hut was chose for the first meeting place.  Church School classes were held in various places.

Two years later, the first building was completed.  The Service of Formal Opening in the sanctuary (now the Fellowship Hall) was held on Easter Sunday, April 1, 1956.

Continued growth created a need for more educational space.  In 1959, a unit was completed which provided seven more classrooms to the church facilities.

The first service of worship was held in the new sanctuary on May 31, 1970.  the sanctuary was consecrated on July 12, 1970, by Bishop Edward J. Pendegrass.

Two hundred years of Methodism and thirty years as a church for St. John's were celebrated on Heritage Sunday, April 29, 1984.

The note for the sanctuary addition was paid off in the fall of 1988, and a service of dedication was held December 10, 1989.

Ground was broken for a new Family Life Center on November 15, 1998.  The Light Family Life Center was consecrated on October 24, 1999, with the Reverend Fred H. Brown presiding over the Charge Conference and the Consecration service.

On Sunday, April 25, 2004, a 50th Anniversary celebration was held.

Last payment on the Light Family Center was made on June 28, 2010.
